gripen hangarOne of the most important and, unfortunately, least discussed , in Romania at least, problem in owning a multi-role aircraft is the cost of using it. Most of this costs are kept more or less secret, they are usually so big that no politician wants to show it off.

About the Gripen multirole from Saab, that was proposed for Romania, the manufacturer states that it is the cheapest to operate in all multi-role aircrafts on the planet at the moment. And Nordics have not been contradicted by anyone until now, so they do have a point. A strong one.

However, as in the case of cars, the manufacturer announces one and the customer realizes how far from the actual cost are those official figures. So, Saab says that a Gripen costs around 5-6,000 euros per flight hour, without telling us exactly how those money are divided.

One of the Gripen users, the South African Air Force in this case, said, unwittingly, that the Swedish aircraft would “eat” a couple of times more money for one flight hour.

In the context of frequent discussions about the (in)sufficient money allocated by the Government in Pretoria to military aviators, a senior official of the Air Force, General John Bayne, revealed the cost for using Gripen fighter jets.

So, according to gen. Bayne, the Gripen has a”dry” cost (without fuel) of about 10,400 dollars or 7,700 euros per flight hour. If you add the fuel, the invoice grows to 13,500 dollars or 10,000 euros!

South African general statements are reinforced by some U.S. reports which sais that an F-16 C / D would have a cost over $ 22,000 per flight hour, while older versions exceed the amount of 25,000 dollars.

Recall that Romania will purchase 12 F-16 AM / BM from Portugal witch will cost over 620 million euros.
